 World Environment Day 2017 Celebration at DScE

Dhaka School of Economics (DScE), a constituent institution of the University of Dhaka, celebrated the World Environment Day 2017 on 5 June at its Eskaton Garden campus. With an objective to create larger environmental awareness and connect people with the nature, DScE in association with COAST Trust and Bangladesh Climate Change Journalist Forum (BCJF) celebrated the day with number of activities.
The day’s activities started with a quiz competition ‘Poribesh Jiggasha’ for the students of DScE.

The event was anchored by Dr. Salma Sultan, an assistant professor of environmental economics of DScE, while Professor Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Muhammad Selim and Dr. Narayan Chandra Sinha acted as the judges. A total of seven teams participated in the quiz competition. This was followed by a rally. Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chairman of DScE’s Governing Council and its (honourary) Director inaugurated the rally with releasing balloons and festoons. Besides the students, faculty members, administrative staff of DScE, the rally was also participated by other dignitaries, including Mr. Kawser Rahman, President of BCJF and Senior Journalist of the Daily Janakantha, Mr. Mustafa Kamal Akanda, Assistant Director (Administration and SR) of COAST Trust, among others. In honouring the auspicious day, a tree was planted by Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad at the premise of its campus. A panel of three members (Professor Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Mr. Muhammad Selim and Mr. Kawser Rahman) was formed to judge the day’s most exciting event, the Poster Competition. A total of 14 posters were prepared and exhibited by the students of DScE’s environmental and resource economics unit.

The day’s programmes were ended with a special discussion on the theme of ‘connect with nature’. The discussion programme was chaired by Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chairman of DScE’s Governing Council and its (honourary) Director, while Mr. Kawser Rahman, President of BCJF was a special guest. Dr. Ahmad urged the young generations to understand the mother earth and make it a livable place. According to him, “we need to make a strong connection with the nature to understand its dynamism and act in a manner that won’t hard the mother earth”. He gave high importance on the need for an active involvement of students with the environment to minimize the various environmental hazards that our society is facing now. Mr. Rahman, assured the students and other participants that his network, the BCJF, in future too would strongly support any such activity on environment by the students of DScE.

The World Environment 2017 celebration was coordinated by Dr. A K M Nazrul Islam, Coordinator of DScE’s environmental and resource economics unit.
