The Development Economics Club of the Dhaka School of Economics, University of Dhaka officially announced its Executive Committee for the 2026 term during a formal ceremony held on Saturday, 4 July 2026, Room No. 301 at the Dhaka School of Economics, Eskaton Garden Road, Dhaka. The programme brought together faculty members, alumni, former committee members, student leaders, representatives of various student organizations, and undergraduate students to celebrate the Club’s new leadership and reaffirm its commitment to academic excellence, research, and student development.
The ceremony was graced by Prof. Dr. A K. Enamul Haque, Chairman of the Governing Body of Dhaka School of Economics, as the Chief Guest, and Mst. Rehana Parvin, Director of Dhaka School of Economics, as the Special Guest.
The programme commenced with a welcoming speech delivered by Mr. Liton Mia, Lecturer of Development Economics Department, who warmly welcomed the distinguished guests, faculty members, alumni, students, and invited participants. In his address, he highlighted the significance of the Development Economics Club as a platform for nurturing leadership, academic excellence, research culture, and collaborative learning among students. He encouraged the newly selected committee members to demonstrate responsible leadership through dedication, integrity, and meaningful service to both the department and the institution.
Following the inaugural session, faculty members delivered welcome remarks before the formal announcement of the Executive Committee.
Addressing the audiences the Chief Guest Prof. Dr. A K. Enamul Haque, Chairman of the Governing Body of Dhaka School of Economics, emphasized the importance of the Development Economics Club in complementing classroom education through co-curricular learning, research, and leadership development. He noted that student organizations like this club play a vital role in equipping graduates with communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that are increasingly valued in today’s labor market. He encouraged the newly elected committee to establish the Club as a vibrant platform for academic dialogue, policy discussions, and research on contemporary development issues, expressing his confidence that it would nurture future economists and development leaders committed to serving society and the country.
Mst. Rehana Parvin, Director of Dhaka School of Economics, conveyed a massage to the audiences. In her massage, She congratulated the newly elected Executive Committee and extended her sincere best wishes for a successful tenure. She described the Development Economics Club as an important academic platform for fostering research, innovation, leadership, and professional development among students. She encouraged the committee to organize quality academic programmes, seminars, workshops, and collaborative activities that would enrich students’ learning experiences and strengthen the Club’s contribution to the institution.
Dr. Sara Tasneem, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Development Economics, highlighted the growing importance of development economics in addressing national and global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, and sustainable development. Referring to Bangladesh’s graduation from the United Nations’ Least Developed Country (LDC) category, she emphasized the need for evidence-based research and efficient resource utilization to sustain the country’s development progress. She encouraged students to actively engage in research, policy discussions, and academic activities through the Development Economics Club, expressing her hope that the Club would continue to develop future economists, researchers, and policy leaders.
Several faculty members also addressed the gathering. Dr. Narayan Chandra Sinha, Associate Professor and former Coordinator of Development Economics Department, reflected on the formative years of the Development Economics Club and recalled the challenges encountered during its establishment, particularly the limitations of institutional facilities. Emphasizing the importance of academic inquiry, he encouraged students to actively engage in research as a means of strengthening their analytical skills and laying a solid foundation for future academic and professional excellence.
Tonmoy Chowdhury, Assistant Professor and Departmental Coordinator of Environmental and Resource Economics, expressed his confidence that the newly elected Executive Committee would build upon the achievements of its predecessors and further strengthen the Development Economics Club through innovative initiatives, active student engagement, and a continued commitment to academic excellence.
Recalling his experience as an advisor to the Club’s inaugural Executive Committee, Mr. Shuvashish Paul, Lecturer of Development Economics Department, emphasized the importance of teamwork, inclusive leadership, and critical thinking in ensuring the sustainable growth of the organization. He encouraged the newly elected committee to foster a collaborative and supportive environment that promotes academic excellence, leadership development, and the acquisition of essential professional and interpersonal skills among its members.
Speaking as one of the Club Advisors, Mst. Taslima Akther, Lecturer of Development Economics Department, highlighted that the newly formed Executive Committee was selected through a fair and transparent process based on candidates’ interviews, commitment, leadership potential, and previous involvement in departmental and Club activities. She expressed her confidence that the newly appointed members would carry out their responsibilities with dedication, integrity, and a strong sense of commitment to the continued development of the Club.
Representing the outgoing leadership, Saad Ibne Sarwar, former President of the Development Economics Club, reflected on the Club’s journey since its establishment and acknowledged the collective efforts and dedication that contributed to its growth as an active student organization. He emphasized the importance of maintaining institutional continuity and encouraged the newly elected committee to build upon the achievements of previous leaders while further expanding the Club’s academic and extracurricular initiatives.
As part of the programme, a documentary highlighting the history, academic contributions, and achievements of Development Economics Department was screened, showcasing the department’s journey and its role within the Dhaka School of Economics.
The formal announcement of the Executive Committee for the 2026–27 session was the key highlight of the ceremony. Prior to the announcement, Dr. Sara Tasneem, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Development Economics, presented the committee selection report to the Chief Guest. Following the transparent selection process mentioned above, Syed Ishfaqul Bari was appointed as President, Afia Anjum Ruhee as General Secretary, and Aritri Mazumder as Treasurer along with the remaining members of the fifteen-member Executive Committee.
The programme concluded with a group photograph featuring the Chief Guest, faculty members, alumni, invited guests, and the newly announced Executive Committee. The ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Development Economics Club and reflected the Dhaka School of Economics’ continued commitment to promoting academic excellence, student leadership, collaborative learning, and the advancement of Development Economics.
